MARY POPPINS (1964) - A mystical nanny literally falls from the London sky and into the lives of two lonely children. Hailed as one of Walt Disney's greatest films and winning Julie Andrews the Best Actress Oscar for her title role, this remains one of the most popular movies ever made. Mary Poppins sums up everything that is good about Disney motion pictures: great characters, wonderful showmanship and a strong story. Released just two years before he died, in 1964, Mary Poppins, with its unique combination of live action and animation, was Walt Disney's swansong and truly deserves the term "masterpiece" that was applied to his earliest work. (The film received 13 Academy Awards nominations and won 5 awards: Best Actress, Best Film Editing, Best Original Music Score, Best Song for "Chim Chim Cher-ee", Best Special Visual Effects.) SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER (1977) - Tony Manero (John Travolta) lives for Saturday nights at the local disco, where he's king of the club, thanks to his dancing skills. Off the dance floor, Tony is quite content to be just another under-achieving 19-year-old working class Brooklyn neighbourhood kid. But when he meets Stephanie (Karen Lynn Gorney), whom he pines after as a dance partner, his horizons suddenly widen. Through Stephanie, Tony sees a future with actual goals to achieve - the first goal being to win the local club's dance competition. It's the dance sequences and club scenes which energize the film and, whether you like disco music or not, the Bee Gees' soundtrack pumps up these scenes with maximum energy. The choreography is electric and hypnotic and Travolta owns this era-defining film! The entire decade of the '70s might well be summed up by the famous opening credits scene of Tony Manero strutting down a Brooklyn sidewalk to the tune of "Staying Alive". [more...]

NIGHT OF THE IGUANA (1964) - Defrocked Episcopal clergyman Dr. T. Lawrence Shannon (Richard Burton) leads a busload of middle-aged Baptist women on a tour of the Mexican coast. Driven to distraction by the hostility of the group's leader (Grayson Hall) and the attentions of a seductive teenager (Sue Lyons), Reverend Shannon has an alcoholic breakdown and hijacks the group off of the scheduled tour through the Mexican jungle to a dilapidated hotel owned by an old friend's wife (Ava Gardner). A budding relationship with an itinerant artist (Deborah Kerr) may be Shannon's last hope of exorcising his demons of insanity and alcoholism. Shannon has literally reached the end of the road and now he has no choice but to come to terms with the failure and self-destruction haunting his life. Director John Huston's riveting screen adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ play garnered the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress (Grayson Hall) and a Best Costume Design Oscar for Dorothy Jeakins. All Tickets: $5.00 (ticket prices include $2.00 facility fee)
THE GOONIES (1985) - On the wrong side of the tracks in a seaside town, a land developer prepares to tear down a block of houses in order to build a golf course. A band of neighborhood kids, who call themselves the Goonies, are about to see an end to their adventures together. Facing eviction from their homes, the Goonies find an old Spanish map and go on the trail of a lost pirate treasure. This is Stephen Spielberg's homage to classic children's adventure films - but the Goonies are real kids: vulgar, insensitive, profane, cunning, and combative. Director Richard Donner hurls plot twists, thrills, laughs, stunts, and special effects across the screen at breakneck speed, and the cast of precocious child actors (Sean Astin, Martha Plimpton, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, and Anne Ramsey) is unforgettable. Micky Rooney as Holly's Japanese landlord, O.J. Berman as Holly's Hollywood agent, Patricia Neal as Paul's patron, and Buddy Epsen as Holly's ex-husband round out a perfect cast delivering peak performances.
