CHINATOWN (1974) - In 1937 Los Angeles, private eye Jake "J.J." Gittes (Jack Nicholson) is hired by Evelyn Mulwray (Faye Dunaway) to undertake an investigation that leads him deeper and deeper into a web of scandal, deceit, and corruption. One of director Roman Polanski's greatest films, Chinatown hooks the viewer into a plot whose unpredictable twists and turns develop into a mind-bending and unguessable conclusion. Complex characters, pitch-perfect dialogue, and masterful acting all combine to make this one of the best noir films of all time. Six Oscar wins: Best Writing, Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Direction, Best Cinematography. [more...]

THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE

[Running time: 123 minutes]
Box Office opens @ 6:00pm | Doors open @ 7:00 | Curtain rises @ 8:00pm
All Tickets: $5.00
(ticket prices include facility fee)
THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE (1962) - Senator Ransom Stoddard (James Stewart) returns home to the town of Shinbone for the funeral of Tom Doniphon (John Wayne). Ransom tells the story of Shinbone's lawless days and how as a young lawyer, he and Tom went up against the sadistic outlaw Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin). And what a story it is! This is a tale of ethical quandaries, and the film's biggest quandary can only be resolved with a lie. As the film’s most famous line has it, “This is the West. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.” The cast includes so many Western movie veterans that it’s a virtual "who’s who" of character actors: Edmond O’Brien, Andy Devine, John Carradine, John Qualen, Willis Bouchey, Denver Pyle, Strother Martin and Lee Van Cleef all turn in stellar performances. The last great film directed by the ultimate American classicist, John Ford, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance remains one of the most influential of all Hollywood westerns, and one of the most thoughtful.
